Functional Movement Screening (FMS)

Functional Movement Screen (FMS)

-

At Skye Health the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is used to screen athletes, weekend warriors, or individuals who are looking to get active and stay active.  The FMS consists of 7 movement patterns (scored from 0 to 3) which provide information to the Physiotherapist and client.  Firstly to determine if any of the movements cause pain, and secondly to see if they pass the acceptable movement standard.  Our Physiotherapist will then use this information to help guide decision making when creating a home exercise program, developing a mobility prescription or rehabilitating an athlete post-injury.  One of the best uses for the FMS is as a pre-season screen to identify movement deficiencies before they cause an injury.  Research has shown that individuals who score less than 14 points on the screen have much greater odds for sustaining an injury. Don't wait to get sidelined with an injury!  There is a reason the FMS is widely used in professional sports organizations of the NHL, NBA, NFL and European soccer, because it works.

The Functional Movement Screen captures fundamental movements, motor control within movement patterns, and competence of basic movements uncomplicated by specific skills. It will determine the greatest areas of movement deficiency, demonstrate limitations or asymmetries, and eventually correlate these with an outcome.

The FMS is comprised of movement tests that require a balance of mobility and stability. The patterns used
provide observable performance of basic, mobility and stability movements by placing clients in positions where
weaknesses, imbalances, asymmetries and limitations become noticeable by a trained health and fitness professional.
